your mood? We have a connection with others that effects how we feel. You adopt the feeling of those with whom you spend the majority of your time. Studies show that you may determine the income a person will attain, by averaging the incomes of the 5 people with whom you spend the majority of your time. I believe the same is true of attitude. Your attitude is the average of those with whom you spend the majority of your time. Take care in who you choose as friends. Those associations have a profound impact in how you think, feel and the quality of your life.

“All learning has an emotional base.”
— Plato

The ability to express and control our own emotions is important, but so is our ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. Imagine a world where you couldn’t understand when a friend was feeling sad or when a co-worker was angry. Psychologists refer to this ability as

Researchers have seen again and again how emotions spread irresistibly in this way whenever people are near one another. As far back as 1981, psychologists Howard Friedman and Ronald Riggio found that even completely nonverbal expressiveness can affect other people. For example, when three strangers sit facing one other in silence for a minute or two, the most emotionally expressive of the three transmits his or her mood to the other two – without a single word being spoken. read more

The Power of Master Mind

I’ve been reading the classic “Think and Grow Rich” and have recently started a master mind group. The power of master mind is essential for all meaningful success. Through the use of a master mind, we are able to tap the resource of universal intelligence. Where two or more people are focused on a single purpose or idea something amazing happens. The resulting collaboration expands creative possibilities.

POWER is essential for success in the accumulation of money.

PLANS are inert and useless, without sufficient POWER to translate them into ACTION. This chapter will describe the

method by which an individual may attain and apply POWER.

POWER may be defined as “organized and intelligently directed KNOWLEDGE.” Power, as the term is here used, refers to ORGANIZED effort, sufficient to enable an individual to transmute DESIRE into its monetary equivalent. ORGANIZED effort is produced through the coordination of effort of two or more people, who work toward a DEFINITE end, in a spirit of harmony.

Let us ascertain how power may be acquired. If power is “organized knowledge,” let us examine the sources of knowledge: read more

What Is a Master Mind?

Napoleon Hill’s The Law of Success defines the Master Mind as “a mind that is developed through the harmonious co-operation of two or more people who ally themselves for the purpose of accomplishing any given task.” Hill believed that our minds were made of up fluid or energy (what he called “the electrons

of the ether”) and that these energies combined to either unfortunate or happy effect when individuals met together. When two or more minds interacted, it produced a third mind, although not necessarily a Master Mind. For a Master Mind to be formed, the individuals in a given group had to possess positive energy and a shared definite aim. Most importantly, the individuals had to be in complete harmony with one another. When these requirement were satisfied, a Master Mind was created. All the individuals in the group had access to this third mind; tapping into it provided inspiration and recharged the brains of all the individuals in the group. Hill elaborated on how this works: read more

A star is born?

Does effort make a difference? Are you born to your lot in life or can you decide the

quality of your life? Everything important in life requires a huge amounts of effort over time. Mastery is the reward of thoughtful relentless practice. Working through challenges creates and increases the neural connections in the brain an increases intelligence.

Achievement is not the result of effortless superiority but the rather the rewards of accomplishment when overcoming obstacles. What if the very act of practice over time transforms who you are and what you become. What if errors and set backs are the very requirement needed to become excellent and make a profound difference to the quality of your life and your happiness. Detecting, processing and correcting error is the path to excellence. Celebrate your challenges, learn, grow and succeed. “Designing Success Strategies” is the study of this process and learning to overcome and prosper from challenge and set backs.

One day last November, psychology professor Carol Dweck welcomed a pair of visitors from the Blackburn Rovers, a soccer team in the United Kingdom’s Premier League. The Rovers’ training academy is ranked in England’s top three, yet performance director Tony Faulkner had long suspected that many promising players weren’t reaching their potential. Ignoring the team’s century-old motto—arte et labore, or “skill and hard work”—the most talented individuals disdained serious training.

On some level, Faulkner knew the source of the trouble: British soccer culture held that star players are born, not made. If you buy into that view, and are told you’ve got immense talent, what’s the point of practice? If anything, training hard would tell you and others that you’re merely good, not great. Faulkner had identified the problem; but to fix it, he needed Dweck’s help. Read More

Effortful Success

wonderful life experience is enjoyed.  Working on something outside of your comfort zone is the very essence of getting smarter and raising your IO. Just like muscles become larger and stronger by working against heavier and heaver weight, so your brain grows in intelligence from working though complex and perhaps even overwhelming problems, until they are solved.

I started Income Alternatives as a journey of discovery. I wanted to understand what causes excellence, achievement and fulfillment. I’ve learned its not where you start but rather what you are willing to learn that makes the big difference. Einstein was labeled as an idiot by his teachers as a child. Michael Jordan was cut from his Jr high school basketball team for lack of talent. I was born with no musical talent according to experts  but went on to received many “A” grades in school orchestra and to play guitar for a living for 10 years.

I’m not suggesting that everyone can be Einstein or Michael Jordan but that we only discover our true potential by struggling against what we seem not to be able to do. Goals set based on what you understand at the time you set them, will often need adjustment as you learn along the way. Goals are just to get you started toward a destination. Where you end up is an adventure to be enjoyed along the way.

The Steve Jobs Difference

Steve Jobs, success in failure

What was the one thing that allowed Steve Jobs to create the Apple empire? I just

Steve Jobs

finished reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. In this insightful work Gladwell notes that Jobs was born at the perfect point in time to be part of a revolution. Not to old, not to young but just the right age in 1975 to spearhead the explosive growth of the personal computer.  Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Balmer, Erick Schmidt, Bill Joy, Scott McNealy, , Vinod Khosla and Andy Becholsheim, were all born between 1954-1955. All were significant contributors to the computer revolution. Other then birth dates, what else did they have in common? They were all exposed to opportunities to develop new ideas and technologies. They all spent countless hours practicing and exploring, driven by a passion to know and discover. Timing is important but only if you are open to new ideas and take massive action once you notice them. Non of them were driven by a desire to become finically wealthy. Yet all of them did become so, as a side effect of their desire to make a difference. What is the one thing you could do, the accomplishment of which would make everything else easier or unnecessary? What opportunity is right in front of you? One that you are just about to notice NOW? To your discovery and making a difference in the lives of others.

Most modern culture historians see Jan. 24, 1984 as the day when the PC revolution truly began. Steve Jobs — sporting his trademark bow tie — walked onstage to unveil the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Macintosh and his enthusiasm immediately infected the crowd. Anybody who has watched the video of the event can see how much the crowd loved him and how excited they were about the device he was talking about.

Macintosh sales started off gangbusters too, but not for long. The company sold 70,000 Macintosh computers through April. However, by year end, sales had dropped to only 10,000 a month. The company discontinued the Lisa in 1985, and with Macintosh sales falling off a cliff, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) plunged into a major crisis. Read More

Think Different to Make a Difference

The meaning you give to events that occur in your life determines the value of experience. A close friend of mine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a few year ago.  When he shared that with me “I said I’m so sorry”. He said “don’t be David, I didn’t share this with you to

Think Positive

define who I am but rather to let you be aware that it may eventually effect how I relate to you. He went on to describe the hidden gift in knowing he had the disease.

For the last number of years, he’d made a point of seeing all the wonders of the world, he had ever dreamed of. He had been on seven continents and enjoyed every minute of the journey along with his wife.  He’s made a point of tell her, everyday, how much he loves and appreciates her. Then he said “I choose not to let the disease define who I am but rather thank it for requiring me to prioritize what is really important in my life.” He also asked me not to bring it up again, because we had already given it all the attention needed for it to serve it’s purpose for us. Since that conversation I make it a point to ask myself each day “what is really important today and what is the positive purpose of every event in my life.”  I encourage you to do the same.

At the turn of the millennium, “Think Different” was the widely acclaimed advertising campaign for Apple Inc. But for company chairman Steve Jobs, thinking differently was more than just a slogan — it was an unavoidable fact of life.

Jobs — subject of a new biopic, “Jobs” — was a typical obsessive, according to author Joshua Kendall, and Apple’s leader probably had a little-known disorder that psychiatrists now refer to as obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, or OCPD. Read More

Learning from a Genius

What if a genius was a person born with a brain that is like a super computer? That only

by an accident of birth, that their brain can process substantially larger amounts of data then an average person’s brain. The depth and complexity of that brain recognizes correlations of seemingly unrelated ideas. Those very connections bring new solutions to problems never before possible.

What is it were possible to unpack those complex high level skills, breaking them down into smaller more manageable process, that may be learned by an average person. What if a course of study were developed so that a student could learn to master the next level of life skills and there by doubling their effectiveness, improving their ability to see, understand and manage their lives more elegantly.  Would that be something that would interest you?

“Almost everyone has some entrepreneurial spirit, and with it, the potential to run their own businesses,” explains Branson in a recent entrepreneur.com blog. “But an entrepreneur’s life isn’t for everyone. Many people decide instead to put their talents to work at somebody else’s company, innovating as intrapreneurs.”

So how do you decide whether you’re better suited as an intrapreneur or an entrepreneur? Here the Virgin Founder gives us three factors to consider when making the decision to stick or twist:

1. Timing is key.

“The first step in preparing for the day you quit your job is to plan out the launch of your business, thinking through everything from the type of location you want for your office to how you want your product to look on store shelves. You need to work out as many of the bugs in your plan as you can ahead of time, while keeping an eye on the clock. If you take too long, the circumstances might change, altering markets so that you could miss your opening.” Read More

Stress for success

Timing and opportunity have a lot to do with success when combined with preparation.

Stress for success

When I started “Designing Success Strategies ” people would ask me to tell them what it was that I did. My answers were very confusing, judging from the questions that followed. I attended a few networking events, which provided opportunity to practice my explanation in front of a live audience.  The experience allowed me to refine my delivery. Now when I’m asked what I do I  state that “I have a consulting company that helps business people double their income in 12 months” Simple clean and concise. It opens the door for answering questions that are pertinent to the listener’s frame of reference.

Imagine for a second that you’re in an elevator. The doors have just opened and the CEO of your large multi-national company steps in. It’s just you and him. One of you flies in his own plane…the other brings his own sack lunch to work. You’ve never met your CEO before, and this is your big chance. What happens next? Does your heart race? Do your palms start to sweat? Do you stammer out a few words of introduction? As Brett and Kate wrote last year, stress can have a dramatic affect on a man’s ability to perform under high-risk scenarios. That great post demonstrated how psychologically stressful situations can lead to a dramatic decline in mental and physical abilities.

The usual types of scenarios where this phenomenon occurs is in high-risk, life or death situations. However, you don’t need to be staring down the barrel of a gun or cornered by a grizzly for your heart to start racing and your mental and physical faculties to break down.  This phenomenon can and does frequently occur when your life may not be on the line but your career or professional future may be, such as the hypothetical elevator encounter described above. The Price of Something Worthwhile

Greatness is not granted but rather earned through perseverance. Pushing through or going around obstacles is the basis for success. Temporary setbacks, delays and surprises provide the learning experience required for mastery. Whether learning a sport, musical instrument or business its all in how you respond to what happens along the way.

One of the great swing guitar players of history is “DJango Reinhardt”. His left hand was severely burned, leaving him maimed and absent a finger on his left hand. Because of that

injury he developed a fingering style that revolutionized swing guitar playing.

I have profound dyslexia. As a result learning to read was difficult. The gift of that experience was  learning the value of perseverance, allowing me to sustain working toward a goal beyond what may be reasonable to most people. The gifted business consultant the late Chet Holmes called it pig head determination. Read the Ultimate Sale Machine for more insight to his brilliance.

My mother was told, “I’d never be able to learn to play a musical instrument by the school experts. Fortunately, she did not share that insight with me and I started playing the bass in the orchestra at age 9. I went on to play in honors orchestra and then to playing guitar for a living for 10 years. The experts were however correct in determining that I had little or no natural ability for music. Yes you guessed it, learning to play was extremely difficult for me. The result was a passion in my playing style that touched the hearts of many and still fills me with joy to this day. Thank GOD for your short cummings. In them may hide your most profound learnings, if you are willing to work diligently enough to earn them.

Anything worth accomplishing will come with a large dose of uncertainty, dedication, and sacrifice. Becoming successful and using our potential doesn’t just happen. It is a process that requires hard work, personal growth, and a positive attitude.

Reaching our aspirations requires the ability to cope with failure and persist during moments of doubt. If we can count on anything it’s that we’ll have to shake off worry, self-doubt, fear, and exhaustion from time to time.

The last post I published was about staying committed to your mission and life’s purpose. As much as the post offered ideas to stay motivated and uncover a purposeful pursuit, it didn’t cover how to fully handle those points when success seems out of reach.

Often success is just around the corner if we can stick with it through those uncertain times.

Before throwing in the towel consider these six barriers to success and prepare to overcome them.

The purpose of Designing Success Strategies is to find other like minded people. Those wanting to make a difference.  The material in the course is transformative. Hundreds of hours of thought provoking interviews, research, analysis and production work has created a step by step process dedicated to helping people achieve the next level of success in their business. If you have hit a ceiling in your business and just can’t seem to push through to the next level, then “Designing Success Strategies might be for you” If you want life altering change then it stands to reason you need to consider trying something new. Success is a belief. The next level of success is just waiting for you to take that step. The step that will set events in motion, forever transforming you into what you were always meant to become.

The hardest thing a brand can do is convince – to go against what people already believe and to ask them to believe something different. Actually, that’s not just true for brands, it’s applicable to anything or anyone. In the scheme of natural human interactions, conversion is relatively rare. To succeed at convincing, you need to overcome all the natural resistance that comes with encountering something new. Essentially, you need to break down all the inclination that has already amassed for an idea or a storyline. You need to destroy the loyalty that already exists for what people have and replace its equity. That’s amazingly difficult via The Limits Of Marketing

The power to change for the better

What if change were easy? What is it were possible to just decide and change the direction of your life.  What if each and every apparent obstacle was a clue to even greater discovery. The process of developing “Designing Success Strategies” was based on asking these very questions. The course was actually my process of transformation. It started with and idea then grew as I did. It’s never too late to learn become empowered and make a difference. It all starts with a willingness to do so. As always, it’s up to you. Make a difference starting today.

Happiness and personal fulfilment

I have chased many dreams in my life. Nice houses, fancy cars and lots of money in the bank can be exciting. It’s been my experience, that those things alone that are not enough.

Designing a life

Imagine the life you really need

The exhilaration of material positions fades shortly after achieved. Not until I asked myself what does does a life worth living look like did living really transform. I started a journey of personal discovery a few months ago. In that short time I’ve met new people and gained new perspective. Each morning, as I wake, I imagine a life worth living, who it is with, what I am doing, the road I’m traveling. I’ve read more books in that last 2 months then I’ve read in the previous 10 years. Amazing things have started happening. New friends, projects and opportunities are appearing and taking form. I know now that my purpose is helping people push through barriers, discover meaningful purpose and transform their lives. These new connection have empowered me to embark on the most exciting journey of my life and create “Designing Success Strategios 2014”.

The power of belief

In the creation of “Designing Success Strategies 2014 ” I’ve studies people that have lived amazing lives. One of the common threads in all these people is their ability to imagine magnificent success before it exists. The exciting discover is that this is a skill that is learned and with practice, mastered. The pursuit of mastery is possible for anyone willing to do the work.

Here are the key element for designing a life worth living. Before you retire for the evening, review the events of the day. Reflect on what you did and how you behaved. What did you do well and what would you like to change? Visualize you having made changes for the better and the superior outcomes received. Write down a list of the 6 most important things that must be accomplished the next day. When you wake, start each day deciding what you will think. Write down your goals and review them daily. Share them with a coach, mentor of supportive partner. Read positive material a few minutes each day. Spend at least 4 hours each day working on the one thing that is your

mastering a skill or developing a talent is doing something poorly. No amount of natural talent replaces practice.  A couple of weeks ago I was watching Oprah interview Mark Nepo. Mark has amazing spiritual depth. One of the crucibles of his growth as a poet was his three year battle with cancer. He emerged from that experience with an incredible depth and understanding. Unpredictable events come into all of our lives. What we do with those events has everything to do with who we become.

Sooner or later, just by living, we are reduced to what matters, as so many things we thought were important and irreplaceable are broken or snapped like small branches in a storm. And somehow, we stand taller with less coverings. It is then we begin to feel gratitude, even though it’s hard to be grateful for what is difficult. In this regard, all poems are expressions of truth and gratitude.

Every major opportunity in my life was the gift of a colossal mistake.  Life is an adventure. Twenty years ago the mortgage market changed overnight from mostly the refinance of existing mortgages to a purchase money new mortgage environment. My business model was consumer direct. I was spending $50,000 per month on TV and radio driving leads to a phone room and converting those leads to refinance mortgage loans. I

was making a fortune. When the market tuned  consumer direct was no longer viable. The purchase mortgage business is done largely by referral. Referrals come from relationships that are built over time with realtors, builders and past clients. The end result was going from being rich and ready to retire to being broke in a matter of months. It was a sobering experience. Over the subsequent 20 years, I’ve discovered some amazing things. That path has lead me to the creation of a personal and business development course that is being released in January 2014. Early reviews of the material have been stellar. I have never had so much fun with any project I’ve worked. None of which would be possible absent the journey of that last two decades. “Designing Success Strategies 2014” Check out this module form the course. I think you will find it empowering. Take every available opportunity to improve yourself. You should not fear making decisions even if you do not feel as sure about it as you would like to be. Good instincts derive from making successful decisions. Even mistaken decisions are valuable because they provide instructive learning experiences. When you learn from your mistakes, you are less likely to repeat them.  Try to maximize your work time and get more work done. Take an ample amount of breaks when you are working hard. We all have a creative genius within. Some of us have developed it over a lifetime and others have lost the creative belief. For those of you that have fallen prey to the false idea

The creative mind map

that you either have it or you don’t there is good news. You do have it. Its just been sleeping. Time to wake the creative genius within and take back the wonder you were born with as a child. Start by creating a mind map. A simple idea written down in the middle of a large blank page. I started with “create a personal development course that will transform people’s lives” and ended up with an amazing journey of personal growth.

When people say, “I’m just not the creative type,” IDEO founder David Kelley refutes that assumption with the idea that if they stick with it long enough, their creativity will inevitably come through. Kelley talks about the idea of “guided mastery” — it’s a practice that parents and educators can use to help kids find their creative confidence.

David and his brother Tom Kelley just published the book Creative Confidence, which will hit the stores soon.

The 80/20 “Pareto Principle” states that 80% of our desired results are driven by only 20% of effort. Contrary to popular belief it takes, on average, 66 days to develop a new habit. Driving results by willpower alone is exhausting and must be done in short burst to produce the most effective outcomes. Habituation reduces the concentration needed to accomplish tasks.

Do the most important tasks when you are fresh, first thing in the morning. MAKE WHAT MATTERS MOST A PRIORITY. You can’t get everything done but you can always get done what is most important. Think in terms of world changing big ideas, build strong habits and live on purpose.
